I actually switched from alto to bassoon, it took me about a year to get very used to it!. I have a hard time playing the oboe because the reed is so small that your lips get alot more tired faster, so the lip thing is gonna probably be your biggest problem!. also, how old are you!? I switched in Jr!. high, so I had pleanty of time to switch before I got of high school!. Definately give yourself alot of time and don't get frusterated, being an accomplished oboe player is a deffinate skill!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, Oboe has that stigma to be a hard instrument to play!. It is hard to play, but it all depends on how hard you want to work to get good!. I can tell you that there are some similar fingering as the saxophone, but the embouchure will be completely different!. Your lips will get tired pretty fast, which will limit your practice time until you build up your strength!.
I think the other big issue for oboe players is to learn how to play in tune!. But that could be learned with working with a tuner everyday!.
I can play the flute, piccolo, oboe, sax, and clarinet! I completely support someone taking up a new instrument!. Just be prepared to work hard that way you will sound beautiful!

Good Luck! Thanks for reading!Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you sound good on oboe, you can sound good on any instrument!.
I was in band for 7 years and I only heard one person that didn't make it sound like a dying duck!. lol!.
Alto sax is actually easier breath-wise than oboe!. At least, that's what I've heard!. I'm a flute player!. But, my really good friend played flute, then oboe, then trumpet, then she switched to alto sax!. She said the only hard part was the fingerings!. She has tiny fingers!. lol!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You are now playing a double reed instrument and want to play a single reed instrument!?

I would say that you are not going to have any problems making the switch, provided you can already read notes and play scales on the Oboe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
