Hello Betsy!. I think there is one question that really needs to be considered before you purchase your daughter's second clarinet!. That question: Is she serious enough about playing the clarinet that she will be playing in college!? I bring this up because, if so, an intermediate clarinet will not suffice for a college music program, and this leads to!.!.!.!. do you want to buy two more clarinets instead of one!. I will suggest here!.!.!. and most other respondents will as well, as you look into buying a Buffet R13 clarinet!. It is considered a professional model, and most professional musicians prefer it to others on the market, but the point is, it is accepted and very much recommended in college!. You can buy a new one, but as a parent myself, and a music teacher, I would never buy a new instrument as long as there are so many good used ones for sale!. Check with craigslist !. org in your city or on eBay!.!. where on any given day there are around 15 for sale!. As for new, the R13 is selling for about $2600!.00!.!.!. way more than what I would want to be spending but if I knew my daughter was going to be playing in college and absolutely had to have one!.!.!. I would have to be on the lookout for one that was reasonably priced!. Now, if she is not going to play in college, You could go with the Yamaha YCL52 or the Buffet International!.!.!.!.!. new price around $1500!.00!. Hope I was able to help you!. Thanks for reading!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

this clarinet is modestly priced at 149!.99 and is recommended for intermediate clarinetist

i've been playing for as long as your daughter has, this fall will be my third and final year in marchingband before i graduate!.

i have this same clarinet and i've been really satisfied with it,!.

also at the site i have listed are many other clarinets ranging in brands, and prices!.!.!. depending on your budget and your daughters devotion to playing the clarinet, you should be able to find something there!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with RJS on a few points!.!.!. but the main question to ask is "how serious is your daughter about her music!?" If she plans on playing through college, as either an ed major or especially a performance major, you should seriously consider the Buffet R13!.

These can be pricey!.!.!. they usually retail for $4500, but can be found for MUCH less (wwbw!.com has them for about $2650 and free shipping)!. As RJS said, you can find them for even less if you shop through eBay or Craigslist!.!.!. the R13 is the ONLY clarinet I would say you could buy without playing!.!.!. you know what you're getting (although it may need new pads or cork)!. Any other brand, and you should ALWAYS TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!. Speaking of- if you can find a used Selmer Signature, and can TRY it first, go for it!.!.!. they retail new for about the same, but you can find them for a lot less if you hunt and are patient!.

Now!.!.!. if your daughter just does band for fun, or just to keep up with music til she graduates!.!.!. there really is no need to upgrade!. Sure, it will make a difference if she wants to audition for AllState or play in Solo / Ensemble Competitions, but in the greater scheme of things, if she doesn't want to persue music farther, why spend the money!? You could spend $100 and get her a new mouthpiece and ligature to help her tone, etc!., then she could still compete but at less expense to you!.

If you are dead-set on an intermediate model, I would recommend the Buffet E11 (about $1000), LeBlanc Rapsodie ($1100), Selmer CL211 (also about $1000), or Yamaha YCL-450 ($950)!.!.!. in that order!. As you can see, you are looking at spending about $1000+/-!.!.!. don't forget about shipping and insurance!.

I recommend the Buffet E11, because if your daughter persues her music farther, she will most likely NEED an R13!.!.!. the E11 gives her a start at getting used to the pitch tendancies and playability of the R13 and will be easier to adjust!.

Feel free to email me if you have more questions, and Good Luck! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yamaha instruments are eehhhh!.!.!.!.!.!.Selmer has a wide variety of Clarinet models from crappy to Pro!.!.!.and even their crappy ones are great!. if you want an intermediate horn try a Selmer Omega!. Sale price it goes foe about $449 brand new!.!.!.!.the yamahas are about the same price and they are not as good as the Selmers!.
