Question: Is the Manhattan School Of Music a good college!?
I want to major in violin performance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Yes It is a recognized and well-regarded music school world-wide!.
I attended that school for voice in the 50's (I am 77 now)
and at that time already had an excellent reputation!.

I am assuming you know how to read music and can play at
first reading any composition presented to you as a test of your sight reading ability!.

They most likely will not consider any application where the
person does not already had instruction in the instrument!.

Provide letter(s) of recommendation by either teacher or
alumni of the college to enhance your chances for an invitation to audition!.

If you plan to apply as a post-graduate student, also letter(s)
of recommendation from your violin teacher(s) will be a must!.

Remember if your application is accepted is for a "live audition" with the faculty division of your chosen instrument!.
Being accepted for an audition does not warranty you being admitted to the school
(but your are already 50% there!)!.

also if you plan to go as an undergraduate you will need to
fullfill all undegraduate requirements for a Bachellor's degree!.
Your chosen specialty won't become prominent (as far as
classes) until your junior(3rd) year in college!.

Last item that you should be aware-The cost of lining in NYC!.
I don't know the cost of living on-campus but I am certain that
is going to be less expensive than living elsewhere in NYC!.
You will also need to apply to live in a campus facility!.
When I was attending the school I lived at home so I did not
have that expense other than public transportation!.

Cost of housing in NYC (unless you go to the YMCA or YWCA) is going to run you around 25K to 30K a year but many students off-campus often share a small flat to cut cost!.

I wish you the best of luck in your violin studies!.
It is a beautiful instrument and one that offer the most opportunities for a good position (unless you become a world-class soloist) in symphony orchestras!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The first step for acceptance to this school is by sending a C!.D!. recording of yourself!. After very close evaluation of this first step, if they want to pursue you as a student, then a live audition is to be set up!. Only the "Best of the Best" is hand selected for this school!. The faculty at the school numbers 275, with just over 800 students from 40 different countries around the world!.
