YOU ARE A HERO!
the best tuba players i have ever found came from the clarinet section! don't let anyone tell you you are too small either, i have taught petite girl tuba players that rocked the house man!! so you can do it too,!.!.!.!.!.!.

excercises!? believe it or not-you need to strengthen your back more than anything else! so crunches and obliques can help, also-get a flexible lower lumbar support from a hardware store like home depot for about twenty bucks-it will save your back!

food!? lay off the junk food and soda, drink lots of water!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Just by saying you're going to pick one up makes you the most AWESOME and valuable person in the band right now!. When your director finally hands over the tuba it should come with a shoulder pad which will reduce some stress!. Doing basic training and eating healthy foods will keep you going!. Starting lifting small one hand weights and then go up gradually!. If you want to make the most of that, practice your marching basics, ie forward, backward, stabbed, turn, along with the weights!. When you get the tuba, practice as much as you possibly can with it doing basic steps!. Ask the other tuba person to help you out and tell you their experiences!.
I have a friend about your body description and he switched to tuba last year!. I thought he was the coolest person!.!.!. we all did!. It always astounded me when he did the little tuba circles and dances at the top of the stands!. Keep in mind, the key of everything is practice, mindset, and!.!.!.!. balance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with the back exercises!. I marched with a sousaphone in high school!. I remember my legs were in really good shape (4 to 5 with a sousaphone - whew!) and my back and stomach were very strong and defined!. I would add squats to that list for leg, rear, and back muscles!. You go! (Oh, and I'm a girl, 5'5")Www@QuestionHome@Com
