to reiterate Nick Y was saying, I suggest an Epiphone Les Paul, its a replica of the classic Gibson Les Paul, except a lot cheaper!. I like it a lot!

I think marshall is a good amp but amp brand doesn't matter too much, as long as you are paying a good price!. Make sure to test it out in the store (if possible) and get one with reverb!!

depends on how you are willing to spend!. if you have a budget of say 700 for everything, i would reccommend a michael kelly patriot custom, which i bought a month ago and it has the tone for a 500 dollar guitar!. for a good amp, i would reccommend(and this is serious) a crate RFX120 combo amp!. many people will tell you that crate isnt good, but i also own this amp and its one of the few series of crate that are very very good!.

gibson is an expensive first electric!. i recommend getting an LTD, its a line of ESP!. (thats wot i have :D) or epiphone, they are a good first electric!. im not too knowledgable about amps!. i suggest just go down to your local music store and talk to someone!. i would say around $500 (Australian) is about a good price for a first electric!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Everyone has their own opinions and here are mine:

PRS make good guitars and have affordable lines!.
Gibsons are over-priced considering the crappy workmanship that goes into these days!. If you can find an old used one in good shape then you'll do yourself a favor!.
Lots of Fender Strats and Telecasters are nice these days- especially the ones coming out of the custom shop and the artist lines (like Eric Johnson Strat or Clapton Strat, etc!.)
Carvin does direct sales (which keep costs down ) from Carvin!.com and they make lots of good guitars and all sorts of styles!. You can custom build (within their parameters) your guitar with them!.
Tom Anderson makes super-nice high end guitars!.
Collings makes superb high-end guitars!. My fav!. guitar is my Collings 290 (a les paul jr!. copy with p90 pickups made by Jason Lollar)!.
There are lots of nice guitars out there!. If you don't know much about electrics, take someone knowledgable with you so you don't end up with a piece of junk!.

Amps:
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is a very popular amp for under $600!. It's an all tube amp that has a great clean tone!. I don't love the distortion chanell but it's ok!. You can buy an overdrive or dist!. pedal for it and run it into the clean channel for a great tone!. It has a big lush spring reverb!. And it is very loud (hence hot rod) for 40 watts!. You can play gigs with this amp no problem!.

My favorite amps are Mesa/Boogie's!. Check out the Lonestar, you'll love it!. They aren't cheap!.
Popular amps right now are Orange, THD, Hughes and Kettner, Bogner, Divided by 13, Dr!. Z, Bad Cat, Carr, Diezel, Fuchs, Vox and always Marshall!.

Many of the above are "boutique" amps manufacturers which means they are more expensive because the are lovingly hand designed, hand made, using the best components available, etc!.!.!.

Good luck with all this and take your time to get what is right for you!.
