He was primarily playing a Gibson SG back then - humbucking p-ups!. I'll see if I can't find out for sure but I'm pretty sure that was it!. An SG is, or at least was, a slightly modified Les Paul, in fact it was originally called a Les Paul!. Lighter body and easier access to higher frets were the two main differences!. Very popular and my first favorite guitar!. "Sunshine Of Your Love" has always been one of my favorite songs to play!.
Yes, it was the SG!. Known as "The Fool" guitar because it was painted by that Dutch group!. He also used a Wah-Wah pedal on that song!.
Whoever shot this video was obviously not a Clapton fan - they seemed to be entranced with the bass and drums!. But there's enough!. BTW: Jack Bruce is playing an SG Bass guitar!. Sorry Y!A isn't letting me post the link - just go to youtube and type it in - full version!.
Edit: Aha! Got it (below)!.
Edit: The Gibson Bass is a EB (Electric Bass) SG stands for Solid-body Guitar!. They are equivalent to each other!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He, on the record played an Gibson SG, humbuckers!. He now plays it on a Strat!. I've got the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar pedal (which I highly recommend) and it says that "He began with running his amplifiers as hot and loud as possible!. He then rolled back the tone control on his SG and engaged his wah-wah to a fixed position!. The midrange/treble boost from the wah compensated for the lack of tone from the SG!."
Probably more than you were looking for!. The pedal is really great though, if you play you should check it out!.

Here's a video of Cream performing it!.
