The first issue to consider when purchasing a clarinet is what your budget will allow!. A good-quality, brand-new student clarinet may be purchased for about $400!. An intermediate instrument may cost about $700 and professional clarinets are generally $1,000 and up!. If this is more than what you are willing to spend, there are two options!. One is to buy a used instrument, which may cost very little, depending upon the quality or state of disrepair of the instrument!. The second option is to rent the instrument, which allows you to send back the instrument when the contract is up, or upgrade to a better instrument if you continue to play!.

If you are going to purchase a used clarinet, you should seriously consider buying one from a reputable dealer!. There are many potential problems that may occur with a used instrument, and it is important to have a company that will stand behind the purchase and make necessary repairs!. A good dealer will often refurbish used instruments, and make them available for a reasonable price!.

The second part of the purchase, is to make certain that you have all of the necessary accessories to get started!. These include:

1!. Clarinet reeds
2!. Method books
3!. Music stand
4!. Cleaning swab
5!. Cork grease
You should plan to spend $20 to $30 for these accessories, as they are essential to getting started with the instrument!.

Like purchasing any product, buying a well-known brand generally assures you of a good quality product, with a company that stands behind it!. These instruments may cost more, but there often include better warranties and, if needed, parts will be more easily obtained!. This does not mean that you cannot find an off-brand that is of equal quality, but you need to have someone who has a thorough understanding of the instrument to tell you if they are of the comparable quality to the better-known brand!.

Probably the best producers of modern clarinets, for various musical purposes, is Leblanc!. Leblanc has been making professional instruments for well over two-hundred fifty years!. Leblanc also makes a student line of clarinets called Vito!.

As a general rule of reference Buffet, LeBlanc, and Selmer might be considered "the best", but it depends upon which model within these brands, and it is also important to consider what you want the clarinet for, e!.g!. Buffet is better for ensemble, and Selmer may be prefered by a soloist--given that we are talking about pro models!.

It might be noted that Benny Goodmans favorite clarinet was a Selmer Centered Tone, and Artie Shaw recorded in 1938 on a Conn 444!.

The most popular brands of clarinets are Yamaha, Vito, Jupiter, LeBlanc, Selmer, Bundy, Noblet, and Buffet!. For a beginner the best of these brands are Yamaha, Leblanc, Selmer, and Buffet!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you can afford it!.!.!.buy a wood clarinet!.!.!.they have a better sound than the plastic!. A great brand to look at is Selmer, I played on the same Selmer from 5th grade to my senior year in high school and it held up and sounded great!. Definitely go to a music store where they let you "try before you buy"--each instrument/brand has a slightly different feel to it!.

Good luck and have fun!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Woodwind and Brasswind has plenty of selections for you to choose from!. It is not a brand, but it can help you narrow down your search!. also, if you're serious about playing, get a wood one, not a plastic one!. The wood ones are more durable and also have a better sound!. Hope you found this helpful! Good luck with your playing!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I play the clarinet!
Buffet is a good brand!.
Wood clarinets are the best kind but extremely expensive!. I have a plastic one!.
also, you probably want to start out on a 2 or 2 1/2 size reed, but you'll work up in time!. 3 is the usual size experienced players use!.

Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yamaha Advantage if you're starting, Buffet Crampon, Howarth, Jupiter, Patricola, and Selmer are all good brands!. I would say in order of quality, go for Patricola, Buffet, Howarth, Selmer, Jupiter, and then Yamaha!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
