Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Are we talking electric or acoustic!? Electric, of course, depends on amp/speaker!. pickups, and effects for its sound, so I guess we're into acoustics here!.

And I don't think there's a single good answer!.

Guitars are a personal thing!. The reason there are so many brands and models is that there are so many different guitarists with different tastes and styles!. The right guitar for you might be dead wrong for the next person!. I love Ovation, but I'm aware that most guitarists think they should be converted to flowerpots!.!.!.

Moreover, even within a particular brand and model, the sound will not be 100% consistent!. Acoustic guitar tone depends on wood grain and drying vectors for glue and finish--things beyond the control of even the most expert luthier!.

The very top guitarists often don't play mass-produced guitars like Gibson; they get their instruments from private makers!. Classical and flamenco players who want nylon-string guitars often shop from the more respected luthiers in Spain; folk, jazz and rock artists go to California for steel-string custom-mades!.

So what's the best-sounding guitar for you!? You'll want to listen to artists that have a tone you like and then look up what equipment they use!. You also ought to shop--play all the guitars in the store and pick out the ones that seem to sound best while you play them, then have a friend or sales clerk play each one (same songs on each) while your back is turned!. One of them will sound best while you're not looking--that's the answer to your question!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No such thing as the best guitar!. What my ears hear and your ears are completely different!.
Gibson make a very reliable guitar!. I still have my 1963 Gibson Les paul and the sound and action, the best especially for my Studio Sessions!.
The neck is straight as a bullet with a slight 1/16" spacing in the center which is how every guitar should be set!.

I use Jackson for sweeps, arpeggios, finger-tapping and its 24 fret really help for the more Neo-classical stuff!.

Fender, USA made are also good for all-around music but has a crispier sound!. I don't play them b-cuz my hands are too big and long fingers!.
Acoustically, it is more difficult to choose!. Takamine, Larrivee, and Godin make an excellent Canadian guitar for the price and durability!.
Martin is one of the best but b-cuz they have no truss rod, they are more delicate to keep well set!.
Gibson are the most known especially among country singers as well as Ovation!.

Bottom line, you buy what you are comfortable with, sound wise!. As for the action, that is a factor that will halp you determine between brands and the sensitivity of the action as to response!.
Keep in mind that the guitar has to be low maintenance and once set, has to stay like that!.

Good Luck !!Www@QuestionHome@Com

There's no perfect answer to a question like this and has been pointed out you didn't specify acoustic or electric!. I can only talk about acoustics!.

There's level upon level upon level!. Above the major manufacturers like Martin and Taylor are the small shops like Collings, Santa Cruz, and Froggy Bottom!. Above them are the custom builders like Benedetto, Monteleone, Olson, Goodall, Ryan, Traugott, Laskin, Manzer and hundreds of others!. While being hand made does not guarantee perfection it seems to come awfully close most of the time!.

The best acoustic guitar I ever played was made by William Laskin!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I suggest the Gibson SG and the Fender Stratocaster!. (both electric)!. If you want an acoustic, I really like the Martins Traveller, it's small and easy to take with you anywhere with an amazing sound!. For acoustic I would say Martins in general, I really like their guitars!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have a Simon and Patrick accoustic guitar, handmade in Canada!.
All hand made guitars are great instruments!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
