In music, a sound that has a definite pitch is called a TONE
A tone has a specific frequency, such as 440 cycles per second!.
Two tones will sound different when they have different
frequencies (pitch)!.

The distance in pitch between two tones is called an interval!.
When tones are separated by the interval called an "Octave"
they sound very much alike!. The vibrating frequency of the
octave tone will be exactly half (either up or down) of the first
tone!.
If for example the first tone was vibrating at 440 cps the second tone being an octave apart will vibrate at 220 cps!.
if an octave lower OR 880 if an octave higher!.

The octave is important in music!. It is the interval between the FIRST and LAST tones of the scale (regardless of where you start in the scales):
Example:1stC 2ndD 3rdE 4thF 5thG 6thA 7thB and 8thC

I am using the C scale as an example but you may:
START WITH ANY NOTE AND FINISH with the -8th note-
the SAME note that you used to start the scale!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You ask a simple question and get a book thrown at you :)

An octave, for the guitarist, is to play the same note on 2 different strings (usually 1 sting apart) and plucked at the same time!.

George Benson is well known for this!. It gives a good effect when used sparingly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"Octave" comes from the word OCTO!.!.!. which means EIGHT!. In music, it can easily be seen on a piano!.!.!. play middle C and then play the C above middle C and you have played an OCTAVE

On a guitar, play middle C!.!. (A string, 3rd fret) and the C above Middle C (B string, first fret)!.!. then count the notes between them on the strings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

----are u reffering to the eight beat!?
octaves is the note beat that lasts as long as an eight of a whole note!.!. look it up in a search engine (like yahoo or google)!.!. u may also want to try looking at its shape in an images search

------or the eight notes!?
in a basic musical scale, u have 7 notes!.!. take C major for example: C, D, E, F, G, A, B!.!. if u know the scale on guitar, u can realize there are ways to play the scale in which the B is played on the third string, which means you still have a lot of notes remaining in the guitar!.!. but which note comes after the B if the scale already ended!? a new scale begins, meaning that u have another C and another scale starts all over again!. This C is sharper (it has a hiher pitch) than the first C!.!.

here is a way of playing C major scale:

1rst string ----------------------------------------!.!.!.
2nd string ----------------------------------------!.!.!.
3rd strign ------------------------------------2(A)!.!.!.
4th string -----------------2(E)-3(F)-5(G)---------!.!.!.
5th string ---3(C)--5(D)---------------------------!.!.!.
6th string ----------------------------------------!.!.!.

notice we still have the remaining 13 or more frets(depending on your guitar) of the third string, plus the 19 frets of both the 2nd and 1rst strings (again, the number of frets depend on the guitar)!.!. all these remaining frets are notes!.!. and some of those notes are part of the C major scale!.!. music is just these notes repeating themselves in different ways and pitches!.!. musical instruments, put up these notes to you so that u can play them!.!. a 24-fret guitar, has 4 octaves of the note C

at the same time, play the 3rd fret on the 5th string (C) and the 5th fret on the 3rd string!.!. hear the similarity!?!? it's cause it is the same note!.!.

just in case ur not familiar with the letters:
C = do
D= re
E = mi
F = fa
G = so
B = ti

good luck :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

An octave is a note that is the same as a low note, but higher!.

If you wanted to sing a low G but couldn't reach it, you could sing high G!. It's the same note only higher!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In music, an octave (sometimes abbreviated 8ve or P8) is the interval between one musical pitch and another with half or double its frequency!.
