A "pentatonic" scale is a scale with five notes!. The most common ones are the major and minor pentatonic, but other pentatonic scales actually do exist!. I'm just not sure why you'd want to use them!.

By their very nature, pentatonic scales have a hard time establishing harmonic resolution, leaving them feeling a little "floaty" and unresolved!. They don't really seem to make a strong statement, but they make great filler!. That's just how it is!.

The pentatonic minor scale is the standard for rock, blues, and a lot of "heavy metal" soloing, so I'd start there!. To get more attitude, add other minor and chromatic notes as you feel the urge - the minor second, the flatted fifth, etc!. Adding major notes to a minor scale can be a very unexpected and harmonically powerful device, if used well!.

The truth is that it's not the scale that rocks - it's you!. Phrasing, rhythm, tone, and proper note selection is what creates the feeling of a song, not just knowing a scale and noodling around on it!. Scales are like a launching pad - they give you a place to start from, but they don't tell you how to do it!.

So anyways, start with the minor pentatonic, and try adding other minor notes into it - the minor second, the flatted fifth!. You can also try adding major notes into it, and mixing the sound of major and minor tonality - use both the major and minor sixth notes, for instance, or both the major and minor seventh notes!. This is the same thing as mixing the natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales!.

I can't really help you much more without knowing more of what you need!. I can tell you that I was noodling around the other day with the minor scale and was coming up with Tool-esque riffs just by selecting the right notes in the right rhythm!. I wasn't trying to play all the notes of the minor scale - just the right ones!.
