Starting with an electric is easier than an acoustic, but still, you should start with acoustic!.!.!.because its hard to switch later!.!.!.
Kind of like learning to drive in an automatic car!.!.!.!.then switching to a "normal" one

Despite what SOME people are saying!.!.!.it is possible to teach yourself (though its much easier with a teacher)
If you dont want to go to a class, if you knew someone who can play and who could "show you the ropes" that would be good!.
Its a lot easier learning from someone who knows!.!.!.!.!.than getting everything from the books!.!.

The key with guitar is Practise, practise, practise

Get to know your chords and make sure you learn them so well that your can interchange without a thought
If you dont already know how to read music, then learn!.!.!.it'll be annoying for you if cant

Ive been playing for 10 years!.!.!.but actually, i think its good when you start a bit older!.!.!.!.because you pick it up faster and you actually WANT to learn lol

You should start off with easy songs with simple chords!.!.!.!.
"One" by U2
"Zepyr song" by Red Hot chilli peppers
"The man who sold the world" Nirvana
"wonderwall" oasis
most of the Beatles music is quite easy
*even if you dont like this music, they are quite easy and repetitive!.!.!.!.so kinda simple to learn

This is going to sound snobby but I hate when I see questions like this--there is no "best way" to learn any instrument, especially if you're teaching yourself (which is often where these questions come from, people who teach themselves)!. It generally seems to be guitar, too!.!.!.I wonder, if you were trying to learn a violin or more classical instrument, if you would ask if there was a "best way!." Somehow people think guitar is easy because it's a pop instrument--guess what, it's not!.

Go to a music or guitar store, and ask for some suggestions for guitar-learning books; you might also think about getting a DVD or finding a website w/a teaching video!. Then, sit down with your guitar and practice!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Do you already have some music background!? Do you already play another instrument!? If so, then I bet you could teach yourself most of it!.

I think it's probably best to start out with one of those DVDs to learn chords and simple songs, at first!. Then, after that, you could probably pick up the rest on your own!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Pray to the Lord Zappa and ask him to teach you everything he knows!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.alternatively, search online for the sheet music to a few of your favourite songs, like Neil Young for example and look for tutorials online!.
My husband is self taught and learns everything by ear!.

If you get guitar lessons, you learn techniques that would be hard to pick up on your own!.

If you teach yourself, you can really develop your listening skills quicker!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
