Question: Musicians--what do you feel, and where do you feel it!?
I don't care what kind of music you play, or what instrument, because this question applies to everyone who's a performing musician, with some talent (c'mon, don't be coy--you know whether you're good or not)!.

When you are really rocking (all music can "rock"), in the pocket, connecting with the audience, whatever you want to call it, try to describe what it feels like!. Physically!? Emotionally!? Are you detached from your body at all, or are you concentrating so hard that you don't actually "feel" anything!?

I guess I'd just like to have someone try to relate the experience to a music lover like me who has emotional and physical reactions to HEARING good music!. I wonder what it's like on the other end!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I sometimes get so excited I feel like I'm going to burst!. But not excited in the normal sense, ecstatic!. I sometimes get frustrated with the limitations of my body and sometimes I lose sense of my body all together!. If I'm singing a character, I feel what the character is feeling which is a very intense displacement!. I'm sort of watching myself!. On cello, its as though someone else is playing for me and I'm just enjoying the bliss!. it's rather overwhelming though!.

That's why I despise when people walk in the middle of a performance!. It just breaks the moment! There's a special connection with producing the music rather than just listening!. In all music I've played or sung, rock, pop, musical theatre, classical!. It differs from time to time but is always amazing!. Good musical climaxes are always almost sexual in essense, at least for me!.

Good question!.

If I'm holding up my end of the bargain, you are hearing and feeling the same thing I am!. One of the most important goals of a musician is to communicate the essence of what they feel!. Anyone can just play the notes, but to PRESENT them properly takes getting in touch with your inner self and determining how best to express that!.

When I play, I feel completely ATTACHED to my body, which, of course, is a necessary element to the success of a performance!. If I felt detached, I'd set the guitar down!. Why bother!? I've spent years choosing guitars that only enhance this attachment!. It's probably why the only time I feel somewhat detached is when I'm playing someone else's instrument!.

Sounds to me like you have a pretty good handle on what it's all about! It's people like you that make life wonderful for those of us who play!

I play Southern old-time (square dance) music on fiddle and banjo!. When the music is really grooving, listeners can't seem to help tapping their feet or clapping along, and I find myself sort of bobbing and "dancing" in my chair in time to the beat of the music I'm playing!. It doesn't happen every time I play, or with every group of people I jam with, but when it does, its great!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have held the opinion for a long time that great musical performance is like great physical romance,!.!.!.you get swept up your performance, give it everything you've got- your spirit, skill, joy, energy, enthusiasm,!.!.!.you tend to almost over play the crescendos and diminuendos to tease the audince a bit more, same with tempo changes,!.!.!.nobody wants to be boring, (not on stage or in bed)!. The best musicians have the spirit of fiery exciting lovers!

I leave the stage sweating like a whore in church, absolutely spent, for I have communed with God and bared my soul!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I get all tingly like when you laugh REALLY hard and when your playing you just feel like you just want to give the audiance something good to listen to and really relate to it!. IT just feels AWSOME!!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

however the music sounds (the emotions) that's how I start to feel, and like tyou said I feel somewhat disconnected from my body!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I play the electric violin, and when those moments come around, i can feel my heart start pumping and my adrenaline rising!. It's so awesome!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sometimes I feel like an eagle flying when I sing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I play classical percussion and I play snare on my high school drumline!. When I am playing an audition piece or solo, I tend to forget about the audience and be so into the piece!. Like, if I am more nervous before I play my piece than during!.

I love being in the back of the orchestra, and have a really fast and loud ending!. I just played a concert Sunday with a piece like that and my adrenalin (sp!?) was rushing!. I love it!. Whenever I stop a moment and listen to the music, its amazing what a group of people can make together!. It even more amazing with kids, all coming together and putting their talents forward to create something amazing!.

I also love seeing my growth as a musicain!. It gives me hope for what I will be able to accomplish in college and later in life!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
