Question: Electric or acoustic!? PLEASE HELP!!?
Hey, I'm a teenager, and I'm starting guitar this summer!. My favorite bands are ac/dc, silverchair, nirvana, pearl jam, wolfmother, muse and my fave songs are even flow, smells like teen spirit, love buzz, highway to hell, emotion sickness, tomorrow, map of the problematique, and woman!. I also like beethoven and chopin, and have been taking piano for 7 years along with voice lessons on and off!. Taking in mind my musical tastes and previous musical tastes, which type of guitar should I start with, and what make!? Keep in mind I plan to get a guitar teacher!. I also plan to start a grunge/alternative/prog rock band at the beginning of the next school year!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Telling me what you want to play, and your musical tastes means nothing to me, as a teacher!. My first teacher told me this: "Look, I can teach you two different things!. I can teach you rock, and you'd be only good at that genre only, Or, I can teach you the guitar!." I think you should take those words into account, and think about it for a bit!. This question is very frequent here on Yahoo Answers!. They all come here asking "I like metal (or some other style)!. I want to learn guitar, what guitar should I learn on!?" I'm not mad, I'm just saying what I see here so often!. So every time I see this question, I answer:

I don't care what style of music you like, Don't make the mistake of learning more of a certain genre than any other genre, as the techniques vary!. Every beginner I have spoken to, tells me the same thing!. What you need to learn is Standard notation (actual sheet music), not Tablature (the number music, is what I call it), you will thank for that later!. Do NOT start a band if you can only do a small solo, as you will suck, the crowd will laugh at you, e!.t!.c!. Believe me, I've been there, done that!. If you want to start a band, wait until you can actually play the guitar smoothly!. I'd say the best guitar to learn on is an electric for a couple of reasons!. It's neck is alot easier to play on, the body is thin, the frets are closer for easy access, the only thing you need is a cable and an amp!. Don't get a guitar teacher just yet!. Take a year and get used to the guitar, it will make it easier for a teacher to explain everything you do!. Hope this helps you out!

NOTE: This is all advice!. You do not have to take any word of it!. However I am a teacher, and this is my opening statement to every student I teach!. If you don't take my advice, fine, but you're missing out a free statement from a teacher!.

There is always electric-acoustic, which essentially is an acoustic guitar with a pickup!. This is a compromise, but some guitarists view acoustic-electric as the worst of both worlds!.

Based on your likes in music and bands, sounds as if you would be better off with electric!.

As to brand, the Squier line made by Fender is a good starting point!. Has a Stratocaster-like sound, good action, etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
