First: I do not know of any French Horn player of any symphony orchestra!.
I do know two string players (violin and cello) of two symphony orchestras and they both have advance degrees in music (Masters Degree) with concentration in their particular instruments!.
Another point, unlike the strings section, which has the largest
number of players in any symphony orchestra, French Horn
player chairs are very few and the competition is fierce to
get a position with an orchestra!.
You may very well be (or become) a prodigy at FrenchHorn, but it will be a very "tough-nut" to crack trying to be consider for an audition if you don't have any academic credentials!.

One last suggestion, call the closest city with a symphony orchestra and ask if the French Horn player(s) give lessons!.
You will then contact them and find out "first hand" of your
chances of entering the professional orchestra musicians
career with your background!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There may be some old geezer with a Performer's Certificate - all music courses, no degree- in some orchestra somewhere - but in the REALITY of today's orchestra world, you will be competing against people with MULTIPLE degrees - and a tons of previous experience!.

There are only a handful of orchestras in the US that are full-time, and they are unbelievably competitive!. With a great education and degrees, you stand a VERY small chance of landing one of these jobs!. WITHOUT a degree of any kind - well, I think you know the answer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

hey, why not!?
there was a 17-year-old violin player in the Dallas Symphony

people with music degrees do have a serious advantage, however X]Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it would be difficult without a degree!. Have you thought about joining the military to play in one of the military bands!. There are some really good ones!. Just a thought!.

I know the military isn't for everyone esp!. right now!.

I would have to say mamianka is right on target!. I am not a professional but I am very active in a couple community bands!. One isn't that great but a lot of fun!. The other is first rate and full of music educators!. Our principal flute play is excellent and has a couple degrees in music performance or at least one!. I play for free because I love it and it is in my blood!. I was in the military years ago and tried out for a band but they didn't have any openings at the time!. It was an all women band and they were terrific! Looking back I kind of wish I had practiced more and auditioned for the military band before entering the service!. I would have been given a spot after basic training!. I think it would have been very interesting to do what I love and be able to travel and get paid to play!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
