There is perfect pitch, and then there is relative pitch!.

Perfect pitch means that you can hear each note perfectly and you can tell whether or not it's in tune!. As one answerer already said, this can be a hindrance!. True perfect pitch is an innate talent!.

But relative pitch means that you can get close--many people with "relative" pitch actually can get the note right every time, but probably don't have true perfect pitch!. In my experience, good relative pitch comes with training!. I've found that I can tell a note if it's on my instrument (flute) because i recognize it by its tone color!. On other instruments, I can get very close, and if I try to hear it like it's played on the flute, I'm likely to know what it is!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Being able to accurately discern and reproduce tone is something you're born with!. To a small degree you can train perfect pitch!. Perfect pitch can sing a middle C without hearing it first or identify it bu sound without looking at an instrument!. If you are already inclined, you can refine that ability somewhat!. But you have to have the ear first and that's something you're born with!. If, after 8 years you cannot distinguish the tones you are not going to be able to develop it!.

That doesn't mean you can't enjoy music, though, or even be a good musician!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm guessing that what you meant to say is that you cannot identify individual pitches correctly, off the instrument, so to speak!.

Perfect pitch, or pitch recognition, can be as much of a hindrance as it is an asset, to a musician!. A poorly tuned piano, for instance, would yield a similar reaction to that of "fingernails on a chalkboard", to someone with perfect pitch!.

What is far more important, as a musician, is being able to play in tune, not only with yourself, but with other people!.

Perfect pitch stems from ear training and who cares if you have it or not !? Ity won't make you play any better!.

90% of the best musicians aren't even close to having perfect pitch but they play on key with perfect timing!.

TIMING IS MORE IMPORTANT than anything in music and a good sense of improvisation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Perfect pitch is something you`re born with and not everyone has it!. Relative pitch is the ability to tell if a note is out of tune and stuff like that!. Relative pitch can be developed by musicians as they continue to study music!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
