Start with Yamaha!. I've played some crummy guitars and some excellent guitars (Taylor, Martin, Larivee)!. Yamaha constantly impresses me with their value and quality!. Very good sound as well!.

Fender and Washburn are OK but their entry level product is not as good!. Look to Fender or Washburn when you want to upgrade to the $500-800 rangeWww@QuestionHome@Com

Acoustic Guitar Magazine a few years ago named the Washburn D10S as one of the best acoustic under $500!. It sells for about $250 and is all solid wood construction!. Laminated woods or plastic have a tendency to kill off tone and volume!. Many people have started out with this model and liked it!.

Another good guitar is the Carvin C250 Cobalt!. It sells for about $350!. It's constructed from solid spruce and mahogany!. I own the C350 all mahogany model and can attest to its sound and build quality!. This is my main travel and performance guitar!.

Yamaha has perhaps the widest selection for the beginner!. I have been impressed with models costing as little as $125!. I play my niece's 3/4 nylon and have an absolute blast with it!. The opening bars to Boston's "More Than a Feeling" were recorded with a "cheapo" Yamaha!. It sounded so good they kept it in the original mix!.

Have your friend try out as many guitars as he can get his hands on!. Make sure it fits his hands and body!. The action (string height) is important!. You may find with certain brands some instruments will be better than others even though they are the same model!. Manufacturing variances happen!.

Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yamaha was my first guitar and was a fine starter!. Takamine also makes some good instruments in their Jasmine line!. A beginner is better off getting a durable but inexpensive guitar to start!. Epiphone has some decent guitars in that price range and if you find a good deal, Seagull makes some very warm sounding instruments for a good price!. Musiciansfriend!.com is also a good place to get a feel for pricing on many brands!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are a girl, you have smaller hands so go for the Yamaha guitar or the Fender for under $200!.

I wouldnt spend more!. If you don't like it, you can always upgrade to a very high end guitar and not jump from a $200 to a $600 to a $1000 guitar!.

If you do that, it is like spending $1800 for your guitar!. That is why I suggest a cheaper model and jump into the high end afterwards!. Give your ear time to traon and see what sound you will want later on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In that price range I like the guitars made by LaSiDo of Canada!. They're all made in Canada with solid woods!. Brands include Seagull, Norman, Simon & Patrick, Art & Lutherie, and several others!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
