Its used to help you tune the guitar!.

Each of the 6 pipes or blow holes corresponds to one of the strings on the guitar and gives you the note that the string should be tuned to!.

So you would blow gently on the E pipe (the high E or first string), then pick the E string (the thinnest string) and compare the sounds of the two!. Is the string the same note as the pitch pipe!? Is it higher!? Is it lower!? If the string is higher, you need to turn the tuning peg a little bit at a time to loosen the string just a bit!. If the string is lower, turn the tuning peg a little bit at a time to tighten the string a little bit!. Blow the pipe again, check the string against it again, and keep doing this until the E pipe and the E string are sounding the same note!.

Then do this with the B pipe and the second thinnest string (B string), the G pipe and the third thinnest string (G string), the D pipe and the fourth (D) string, the A pipe and the fifth (A) string, and finally the low E pipe and sixth or thickest string!.

Be warned though that if you're a beginner, it can be VERY HARD to match the pitch of the pipe to the string as they sound very different and the difference in tone (or "timbre") can really throw you off!. And if you blow too hard on the pitch pipe, the note you get is likely to be out of tune with the true note it should be!.

IMO, the best thing to do with a pitch pipe is to throw it away and invest $20 or so in an electronic guitar tuner which you can buy at any music store!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The pipe has a constant pitch tone through each hole!. You need one good pitch to help you tune your guitar!. Otherwise, you might make every string too tight, or too loose, and you won't match the pitch of other instruments!.

Your pipe has one hole for the pitch of every string on your guitar!. Match the sound which comes from the pipe for the lowest string, then tune it up!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you have to ask what a pitch pipe is!.!.!. (they have only been around for 400 or 500 YEARS), then throw it away and BUY a tuner!.!. about $20 and you won't destroy your guitar by over tightening the strings which most beginner so!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
