Question: Is it true that you don't need to strum all the strings when strumming up on an acoustic guitar!?
I wasn't sure, I had heard many people say that I didn't need to when I said I was having a hard time not strumming all the strings on chords like an A chord!.

Yes, it's true!.!.!. you hit all the required string on the down stroke and then just hit a few on the upstroke!.!.!. this is a common practice and most guitarists use it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In fact, there are many chords in which you should NOT stum certain strings!. There is a technique where you can "mute" a string by laying a finger or thumb on it without pressing down behind a fret!. This action prevents a string from vibrating and sounding a note!.

I recommend you pick up a chord book from a music store, that shows you many of the common chords and their diagrams!. In many, they will have symbols that tell you what each string will be doing, such as a solid black dot to show which string is pressed and behind which fret, an open circle at the top of the diagram to show which string is sounded without fingering, and a small "x" to indicate which string should not be sounded, or muted!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
