I would say go all out and buy a Taylor, but don't buy any of the Baby Taylors unless you have tiny hands!. They are like trying to play a ukulele!. Get at least a 110 series Taylor!. I have a 414CE that I have had for over four years and it has been great to me!. If you buy a cheap guitar, it will be hard to play and will discourage you from practicing!.

Honestly, for a first guitar it doesn't really matter that much!. You didn't specify a price range but I would recommend spending at least $200 to ensure that you get something good enough to not hold you back!. In that price range, Fender, Ibanez, Epiphone, and Yamaha all have comparable models!.

I recommend you go to a good, reputable music store (with a friend who plays, if possible) and try them all until you find one that appeals to you!.

My brother has a Martin electric acoustic, if that's a route you want to go!.
If you just want an acoustic, I have a baby Taylor, which is great to learn on because it's thinner than regular acoustics!. (You can see your fingers and the strings better until you get used to where they are!.)

A good acoutis guitar for the money is Takamine!. This guitar is one of the good ones and inexpensive and low maintenance!.
