I have been learning guitar for over 32 years !.I love to play and when I started I could not get enough information, I was(and still am) always hungry for knowledge!. It was alot harder in those days (no Internet,no tab only one guitar magazine) but that didn't discourage me!. I have taught guitar and find that most students want instant results with little or no work!. This will never happen, you need to work at it, you need to LOVE it!. Just because you can get high score on "Guitar Hero" or "Rock Band" doesn't mean you can play a real guitar!.It takes dedication;passion;sacrifice and love of music to want to play!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I know what you mean! There's this kid in my school that brings his acoustic guitar almost everyday and holds it amongst a group of kids, but I hear that he actually can't play very well and all he knows is one minute of a song he likes!. I am right now learning to play guitar (classical)!. It was my choice to play classic guitar, and it's funny because people I know ask why, out of all the styles I could learn to play, I chose classical!. And that's because I don't want to play guitar because it looks cool, but because I want to play it! And classical music for guitar is so pretty :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your statement does not surprise me!. Many people who are
"attracted" to the guitar believe that by just "strumming" they
are "players" of guitar!.
This is OK as long as that what satisfies their "musical expression" This people are happy playing to themselves!.

Then other people who want to"learn" how to play are willing to set aside some time on the daily basis and learn from the
basic steps to more advance sutudies about the art of playing this beatiful instrument!.

I visit large guitar stores (Guitar Center for example) and you
find a tremendous turn over of guitars sold to young aspiring
guitarist who have little idea what dedication is required to
"learn" instead of just "strumming"!.
I am making this statement based on the sales force staff that tells me how much return of guitars (within 30 days of purchase) at a great financial loss TO THE BUYER who easily gives up trying to "learn to play"!.
According to the salesmen a return guitar "bought back" by
the store is only valued at about 50 to 60% of the original price!
We should buy stock in stores like Guitar Center!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Too many of my younger students through the years were of the belief that a week's teaching on the guitar would be sufficient for them because they see the ease by which a good guitarist can play!. Sadly, many of them become disenchanted at their lack of progress coupled with the painful fingertips!.

Forming the calluses for me in 1956 did not deter my strong desire to learn the instrument!. I learned on an acoustic Gibson with Black Diamond strings and never missed a day of playing for two solid years!. But that's a story unto itself!.

Nevertheless, if a person truly wants to play, he will!. But those impressionable youth among us that sees Clapton or a myriad of other accomplished guitarists and believe they can play at the same level within a month's time are truly deluded!.

And no guitar player "can play anything by just listening to the tune!." You've heard the lines time and time again!. I have yet to master "The Flight of the Bumblebee" because once that is done, there is no challenge left for me!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My boyfriend plays,

he hasn't really had the best influences tho until recently so he hasn't progressed as well as he should have!. He is now listening to alot more different styles and learning all sorts of new techniques which is great, he is learning alot now and is progressing extremely well!. I'm a drummer myself!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am in that process right now!.!.!.!. I got a shitty old guitar for free from my friend a couple months ago and have been playing almost every day since!. It is nice to be past the callusing of the fingertip stage but I'm have still got a long way to go!. So far it has been worth it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
