It is possible to learn all the fundamentals of an instrument by ear!. In fact, an entire pedagogy school places its focus on this and it's called the Suzuki method!.
If you ever want anything serious out of music, however, you'll need to learn to read!. You CAN learn the instrument(s) first if you want to, though!.

I'd recommend looking into Suzuki, and also learning solfege (do, re, mi, etc!.)!. Once you understand the basic pitch systems, it will make much greater sense!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've been playing by ear since I was a small child!. Teaching someone else how is NOT all that easy!. Still, there are a lot of sites that deal with playing by ear!. You can find most of them just by Googling "ear training!."
