Question:

I'm sure there are more!.

My question is this: How is it that in our culture(s) we tend to value the talents of the artists we love, for the pleasure they give us, for the ideas they teach us, and for the light they shine in times of darkness, but we neglect to care for them, value them, or nurture them as people!?

I've been reading about Janis, Jim, and Jimi lately!. And the film La Vie en Rose just left me there frozen in my seat at the cinema until the lights came on--talking with my date who kept insisting (for my benefit) that "that's not love!" He was right!. I am, as it turns out, an atypical artist in New York City who is ab!. to fly the coop because most people here value me only for my art (poetry, performance poetry, and singing) and for my gifts as an educator!. Living such a public life in such a hectic city, I usu!. love my solitude!. But being on vacation for a couple of weeks now has brought it home to me that most successful artists feel essentially alone!.

Creativity may involve seeing things differently than most other people!.But that creative spark which sets people apart may also isolate them, because they have fewer shared reference points in their perceptions of everyday lifeWww@QuestionHome@Com

It is very common that we value the work but not the artist!. While it is regrettable, it is difficult to imagine how society could be made to support and nurture such talents!. Many people believe that important creativity is only achieved through solitary thought, so it may even be that comforting and befriending some artists would limit their creativity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

People can be so dismissive!. I once heard a great man(Jimi Hendrix) say that he hated compliments!. It was in the interveiw with Johnny carson!. He disliked being complimented because it put him on the spot at the time, comparing his experience to when a circus would come through town everybody would jump up and down about it expecting something cool to happen!. People start to expect certain things from you and it can be hard to keep up!. You also have to remember when someone is gifted with that amount of talent and creativity they tend to be a bit unbalanced!. The public eye can be a scary place, and I think essentially everybody has a breaking point!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
