Question: Trumpet Help! I have to play a gig in 7 days and havnt played for 8 years!!?
I still know how to play and have the time to practise my *** off but I'm filling in for the trumpeter in a ska band and it's a pretty big gig!.
They know the score and if I'm not ready they can do it without me!.
My problem is that I cant get beyond the 'A' note because my lips aren't as strong any more!.
Any tips on a quick method other than practising 24/7 would be appreciated!.
also tips on playing ska would be very useful too!.

Don't practice your @$$ off, that's a sure way to not be able to make it through the gig!. Spend 5 or 10 minutes--fifteen at the outside playing long, low tones!. Start at low "C" and work your way down!. Concentrate on getting a good tone, see if you can get into your pedal tones (below F#)!. Do this every couple of hours and stop at the first sign of fatigue!. As your lip begins to feel stronger spend a little time working your way up from that low "C"!. Once again stop at the first sign of fatigue and avoid relying on pressure to increase your range--nothing worse than ending up at a gig with bruised lips!. After you play spend a couple of minutes "buzzing" without your mouthpiece--you want to get the blood circulating to the muscles that form your embouchure as soon as possible!. You can do a little upper register work, but very little--that bruised lip thing again!.

Regarding the SKA tips--sorry but I don't know SKA--I do know jazz and hopefully this bit of advice will help you get through your gig!. Know your limitations and play within them!. Figure out what you can do well and depend on them, avoiding the things you don't do well!. They may think about the things you could have tried but didn't for a few minutes; but they'll remember the thins you tried to do and couldn't forever!. (I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea!.) Anyway, good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My suggestion is to play for a couple of minutes every couple of hours if you can!. Just work on chromatic scales, getting higher every time!. In regards to ska, I really can't help!. Sorry!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Why the hell did you agree to that!?!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I hope you mean for getting above the A (first, and second valve)
for playing high notes!.!.!. don't push your mouth into the mouthpiece really hard, because it's harder on your lips and mouth, instead!.!.!. blow faster, which makes a cleaner!.!.!. and better sound!. You have to go up the scales!.!.!. start at G (open) and go up!.!.!. to A,Bflat,High C, and so on!.!.!. sooner or later it will get to you and you'll know!. but do NOT play simultaneously for 5 hours or something like that!.!.!. or else you will get a very bad stomach ache and your mouth will feel numb!.!.!. instead play for about 10-15 minutes and rest for about 10 minutes each time!.!.!. then once you feel up to playing the music, go through the music slowly!.!.!. like try each line of the music sheet until you fully get it, then keep going on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
