Question: HeLp ~ Song demo!.!.!. Has to be original creation!?!? Is a capella allowed!?!?!?
When someone is trying his/her luck on a music recording company (be it independent or major label), should the demo be his/her own original creation or can it be a cover song!? Note that some people are born with EXTRAORDINARY talent but without any songwriting skill!. Their voice is all they can offer!.

Another question: does the demo track need to have music accompaniment OR can it be just a capella!?!? Any input will be very much appreciated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are going to submit a demo it should be an original creation!. I would suggest against a capella, even if you've got a great voice!. Even if it's just one instrument accompanying you, it's better to have it then not - an instrument will contrast the voice, provide harmony and context, and demonstrate that your voice is staying within key, relative to that instrument!. With original compositions, it's hard to figure out sometimes if a singer is necessarily in key!. If you have some accompaniment it's easier to do the key changes and modulations and have it sound correct!.

If all you can do is sing and you have no songwriting abilities, then a demo isn't necessarily the way to approach a recording company!. Instead of presenting yourself as an artist, you would need to present yourself as a singer-for-hire!.!.!. in other words, if you can't write your own music others will have to write it for you, and that isn't always feasible!. Much more likely is that they would want to bring you in as a studio singer to cut scratch tracks or demo tracks for artists!. I dunno, that's a part of the business I don't know so much about!. All I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't present yourself as an artist if you can't write your own material!. That would make you a performer or a singer, but not an artist per se!.

I'm serious about being original on a demo - if it's not, they won't look twice at it!. They get too many to listen to covers - you can't make money off of covers, you make money off of new material (speaking from the label's perspective)!.

Instead of going straight for a record label, if you are interested in being an "artist" instead of a "performer", take some time to learn how to play an instrument and write your own songs!. It will make you a better musician - if you were ever to go into studio work you would have to be conversant in some music theory, ie, chord charts and things of that nature anyways!.

Another route is to attend local shows and see if there are any bands around that are looking for a singer!. You would probably have to write at least some of your own lyrics, but that's one option for you - that way you get stage time and a chance to get yourself out there!.

Labels look for bands and artists who can draw a crowd - crowds mean money!. Keep it in mind!.

If your goal is to highlight your voice, then an A Capella piece would be fine!. You should also use something that really highlights your pips!. You are not required to have an original piece!.Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
