Question: FLUTE Question!!!!!?
How can I maintain consistent breath support on the flute!.
Right now, for example, if I play a whole note, the pitch will continually drop on the tuner!. It starts out as in tune or even a bit sharp, but gradually drops and goes flat!. HOW CAN I FIX THIS!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Breath support just takes time to build- with the right practice!. Your muscles have to learn to fine tune what you're doing, and your lungs need to expand!.

At the beginning of each practice session or rehearsal, take 2 minutes to just breathe!. Inhale slowly for 4 counts, then say "tssss" as you exhale for 8 counts!. (Make sure your tummy is expanding, and your shoulders are not moving as you breathe!.) Do this 4 or 5 times!. Then do long tones!. Play a simple scale, or even a chromatic scale, and apply the same idea as the basic breathing- inhale for 4 counts, hold each note for 8 counts!.

Try to listen and steady the pitch, but keep going, even if your pitch is beginning to go flat!. After a week or 2 doing this exercise, sit down with a tuner and play long tones!. Some of your notes will naturally be sharp or flat (called pitch tendancies), but for this exercise, just try to keep it steady!. If you start to go flat, put more air behind it- blow a little harder!. If you find yourself going sharp, slow your air!.!.!. just try to keep the pitch steady!.

also, while doing this, try to practice in front of a mirror!. You may notice that you might be doing something strange with your posture, embochure, or hands, that may be causing your problem!. When I started flute, I went sharp on every long tone!.!.!. when I played in front of a mirror I found that I was slightly rolling the flute in on my mouth- this will raise the pitch! You may be rolling out as you exhale, without realizing it! Check your posture and make sure you're not leaning over, look at your hand position, and pay close attention to your embochure!.

I hope some of this helps- the breathing exercises are usefull on any wind instrument!. Good Luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I play the flute and what I do is,

1!. Take a huge breath!.
2!. Make a small gap between my lips!.
3!. Suck in my cheeks!.
4!. Only blow a little air out but the tiny hole build up pressure so it feels like there is more air!.
5!.Tongue the note!.

It'll turn out much better!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm a music teacher:

Practice by taking a straw and blowing 4 counts into water!.

Make sure sure inhale deeply!.!.!.If your shoulders go up you are breathing wrong!. You should get fatter instead of your shoulders rising!.

You could even change your lip position as it starts to crack!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
