In general terms, I guess you could say that a lead guitarist plays by plucking the notes of the tune on the guitar and a rhythm guitarist plays the song by strumming the chords!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A lead guitarist is the one who plays the solos , a rhythm guitarist plays the accompaniment!. Solos are scale based , accompaniment is chord based!. A lead player is generally a more accomplished player!. A lead player will ( also generally) play rhythm during the rest of the song where there is no solo!. In bands with only one guitarist the guitar player must play both!. Fine examples of one guitar player bands would be Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page) Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen) and Rush (Alex Lifeson)Www@QuestionHome@Com

The lead guitarist are usually the more skilled at playing guitar and do the more difficult stuff such as solos and harder to play riffs!. The rythm guitarist plays mostly chords and keeps the main rythm to keep the Lead guitarist on beat!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Most lead guitarists can read real music and most rythm guitarists can only play TABsWww@QuestionHome@Com
