also sax is in Eb - flute is in C!. So you need to write the sax part a minor third HIGHER, not lower!!! If the flute part is in F, you would write the sax part in A!. The previous responder has it backwards!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

take each note down 3 half steps (a c=a g=e) ectWww@QuestionHome@Com

If the flute is playing a written C then the alto sax (Eb) will play an A to match it!. If the alto sax plays a C, that will sound as an Eb will on flute or piano (and is why we say the alto sax is in Eb)

The easiest way to do this is put the flute part into Finale (or Sibelius) and let the software create the alto sax transposition for you!.

The next easiest way is to take every flute note down 3 half-steps!. From Eb for example - Eb-D, D-Db, Db-C (technically called a minor third) and the alto sax would play a C!.

add: If the flute part is in F, you write the alto sax in D!. That's why altos play a D major scale when the director calls for F concert scale!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
