Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Ensemble usually refers to the whole stage cast of the production!.

Chorus refers to the actors and singers who are not performing solo or parts by themselves!.

Not knowing which theatre piece you are auditioning for I don't know which to tell you is better!.

Best of luck on your audition regardless of what the outcome is! Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In musical theatre, it's really the same thing!. Ensemble is a fancy word for the chorus!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The two words are interchangeable, but the modern usage has come to lean toward an ensemble being a group of instrumentalists and a chorus being a group of singers!. If you have a group that plays and sings, it is more likely to be called an ensemble as well!. You could even call the same group a "school" in it's most literal sense!. The best thing to do is to pay attention to the local usage and go along!. The reputation of each group depends on it's talent pool and it's collective sense of discipline!. Certain colleges and Universities will assign one word to it's more elite group however!. You can find that out by speaking to the local professors or one of the more experienced students!. Other words that are thrown about are Consort, Society, and even Congregation!. (which is thought to have religious implications but really does not at all!)

You can have a chorus of like instruments

You can have an ensemble of vocalists

Consort implies a smaller group

Society implies that the members are more important than the combination of instruments or voices employed!.

Congregation implies that it is a large group and possibly even a combined one!.

School implies that a matched set of instruments or voices are used

Choir implies the same thing, although the term is looser!. You can have a choir of horns that range from soprano to bass, and the same with voices!.

You can specify the number by using the terms
Duo
Trio
Quartet
Quintet
Septet
Octet
and so on

If the group is less formal in nature, you might even see the words aggregation, bunch, mob, or family!.

I'm sure I've left out forty or fifty other words and phrases, but the important thing is that the quality of the group is stated in the performance, not the name!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

actually, it' s not the same thing!. chorus is chorus!. Ensemble are the little parts, that also happen to sing together more than they sing solo!. The mailman with one line, the butler announcing dinner, the maid with the next costume!. they all get together to sing, but they are recognizable as being themselves, and not lumped together in that anonymous group the Chorus!.
Having sung both, I'd say, if it's a question of starting small and moving up to solo eventually, go for ensemble!. If it's a question of getting to sing at all, go for chorus!. It also depends on how well you deal with the stress of performance!. If you can handle a one-shot line ( you goof up and there's no way to improve your rep) ensemble is good!. If you'd rather have the security of contributing without all the responsibility, chorus!.
All singers, irregardless of what group they sing with, receive more or less the same sort of training!. There are plenty of really good voices in a chorus, and shall we say, some interesting ones in solo ( that you wouldn't be quick to call pretty) as well!. I t comes down to what management wants to see as well as hear!.
Neither is better than the other, they fulfill different functions!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
