okay, the F chord is a tricky one to learn, but it will open you up to learning a bunch of new chords, called barre chords!.

First, as the name suggests, you "bar" your index finger across the first fret, holding down all the strings!. It's uncomfortable at first, but with some practice you will get used to it!.
Next, place your pinky on the third fret of the D string
Then, put your ring finger on the third fret of the A string
Finally, place your middle finger on the second fret of the G string!.

It should look something like this: http://www!.ehow!.com/images/GlobalPhoto/A!.!.!.

When you strum the chord, you'll be hitting all six strings!. Try to make sure each one of them sound!. A lot of times, especially at first, some strings wont play their note, it will be more of a muffled clicking noise!. Keep the chord held and play each string one at a time to see where you're having trouble!.
Make sure you have plenty of pressure on that index finger, and keep your fingers arched enough so that your pinky isnt touching the G string and your middle finger isnt touching the B string, those are also common mistakes!. Keep your thumb behind the neck of the guitar, it should make it easier to hold the chord!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Steven B is correct, however there are other ways of playing chords!. If you have trouble "barring" the chord you can play it like this, index finger (1) holding 1st (high E) and 2nd (B) strings down on first fret - middle finger (2) holding 3rd (G) string down on second fret - ring finger (3) holding 4th (D) string down on third fret!. Strum the fifth through first strings (5 strings ignoring the 6th (low E)!. Here's a diagram!.
