A few tips:

1) Buy a cheap metronome (shop on ebay, maybe)!. Set it at a tempo that's so slow that you can play the thing easily!. Play the thing at that speed a couple of times, then turn the speed up a click!. Keep going faster, one click at a time, until you're actually able to play it faster than you need to!. Bingo!

2) Try messing around with the passage!. For instance, try to play it in different rhythms--play each pair of chords or notes long-short, then turn it around and make them short-long!. Try playing each note as short as you possibly can (all super-staccato)!.

3!. Practice the scale (diatonic or pentatonic) that your piece of music is based on!.

4!. Blame the drummer for not keeping a solid beat :-)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sorry, the best way to develop technical skills is to practise, practise, practise!. You are doing two things when you practise repeatedly, one you get to know the fret board inside out (lol), which also helps in speed and accuracy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What you need to do is just go at a slow tempo and just keep working on all the hard parts then put it all together and I'm sorry to say but you need to PRACTICE!!!!!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

IF you really have been playing for 5 years then you should have seen a teacher 4 years ago because after 5 years you should know that playing a guitar is learning to PLAY AHEAD!. Your proplem is, You are not thinking any further ahead than your next note, if even that and when you play guitar you have to be thinking at least 2 or more measures ahead!.

When you think just a note ahead, it's impossible to get your mind into gear for rhythm changes!.

Try mentally practicing the riff you plan to play while you are still on the rhythm part and then you will find you can just move easily and smoothly into the riff or back!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
