I play both guitar and fiddle!.

I LOVE playing the fiddle; its become my main instrument these days (along with banjo)!.

Its a good idea to rent a violin for a while first, until you're sure you're going to stick with it!. Then after you've been playing the rented instrument for a while, you'll have a better sense of what to look for in a violin and be better able to evaluate instruments when you do decide to buy one for yourself!.

As for quality, you should be able to get a decent playable student grade instrument for between $250-$500!. Add another $100-200 for a decent bow!. Don't buy sight unseen over the Internet!. Go to a violin shop (not a general, all-purpose music store) and try out fiddles in your price range, and if you find one you like, buy THAT instrument -- don't assume that you'll find another one "just like it" from the same manufacturer at a cheaper price somewhere else, because you WON'T find another one "just like it" -- they're all a little different!.

Start off on the right foot by taking at least a few lessons with a teacher who plays the style of music you want to play, whether it be classical, jazz, bluegrass, old-time, Irish, or whatever!.

Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it is a good idea!. Your studies in guitar will help with the violin!.

I'm a violin teacher and I have several good guitar players who study violin with me!. What you need to do is find a good teacher, who will teach the styles you want to play!.

As far as renting, why waste money renting when you can find a decent violin for under $200, which you can sell if you don't like violin (but you will)!. See:

It takes a while before you sound any good on the violin ; everybody sounds like rubbish for the first six months!.

Any decent beginners outfit purchased from a proper violin shop should be okay!.An outfit will include violin, bow, case, rosin and perhaps a shoulder rest!. There is no need to spend more than $250 for your first violin!.

After you have got the hang of it you can put better strings on it and that will improve the sound quite a bit!. Dominants are a good string and they cost about $40 per set ; yes, good violin strings are not cheap like guitar strings!. LOL
The quality of the violin string makes a HUGE difference to the sound ; not like the guitar at all!. Most beginners violins come with very cheap strings!.

Only buy the violin from a proper violin shop!. Do not buy it from ebay or a general music shop!. Violins have to be set up correctly ; pegs shaped to fit the peg holes, bridge and soundpost in their correct positions!. If this is not done then the violin will be hard to tune and difficult to play!.

I actually think the violin and guitar go very well together!. Learning one will help improve your skills on the other!. This is just my personal opinion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
