NYSSMA is a music festival for all types of musicians from voicalists, to woodwinds, to percussions, strings etc!. It is after school on both days, a person should only be present on the ONE day that they are assigned to preform!. If you have a private music teacher you can ask them about NYSSMA and they will give you a song and you will practice practice practice and then they will assign you a date by which you will go and preform!. You come prepared with music, your instrament unless its a piano or your voice (one for the judge- which is madatory, and one for you which is optional) for voice you will need a CD and CD player for your accompanyment or you can get an actual person to accompany you while you sing! It is crucial that you bring your NYSSMA permit with you-your music teacher will get this for you but you must bring it to NYSSMA!. You will sign in with a desk and a person will take care of filling out a form based on your permit, which will be handed to the judge and on the form the judge will grade you while you are preforming!. The gradeing is based on different aspects depending on what your instrament is!. There are different levels of NYSSMA 1,2,3,4,5,&6!. (one being the easiest 6 being the hardest) Consult with your music teacher to see which level is best, your peice of music should be the level that you are!. The overall grading for levels 1-4 are out of 28!. The overall grading for levels 5 and 6 are out of 100!. Good Luck! :o)Www@QuestionHome@Com

NYSSMA is a state exam in New York!. There is a syllabus and you prepare a few pieces for the grade you feel you are at!. Then there are a few days for testing!. You will be given a time slot!. If you are an instrumentalist or a singer you have to provide an accompanist!. They mark out of 30 and it seems like everyone gets a high score, around 26 and up!. If you have one of the top scores you will be selected to perform in All-County orchestra and possibly all-state!.!.!.

this sounds great and all but NYSSMA is the biggest waste of time!. So many students stress over NYSSMA and the judges judging you may not be a specialist in that instrument!. Sometimes you have an oboe player adjudicate strings and piano or a vocal coach adjudicate piano and brass!. It makes no sense!. NYSSMA judges have some training but their is no standardization across the board in terms of what is an excellent performance compared to a Very Good to a Good to a Fair one!.

I would avoid doing NYSSMA!. You have to enter NYSSMA through you schools music teacher and any credible private teacher in NY State denies the existence of NYSSMA!. There are much better third party music examination programs that are internationally credible and supported by prominent musicians!. If you are taking private lessons and your teacher is making you do NYSSMA, it won't hurt you but be warned, the marks and standings don't mean a thing!. Often the scores are too high and like I said earlier you may not have a specialist in your instrument marking you!. As well, in the real world no one gets a 29 out of 30 in a performance or an jury!. When NYSSMA gives you that score, students think they are almost perfect!.!.!. its unfortunate!.

It won't hurt you to participate but it doesn't give you any benefits!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
