Well Epiphone will use a cheaper paint, Gibson use a special paint to let the guitar age properly. If you see all of the guitarists with battered up guitars with paint missing, this is due to aging wheras with a cheaper guitar it will just scratch, but the G400 is still a very good guitar.

will be similiar but not exact

No. It will still be an Epiphone. And it will probably say so at the top of the head. Why should you be concerned about which it will look like? If you can play one, you can play the other. Or is it a prestige thing? Buying a lesser model will not make it sound any better.

lemme give you the very simplified low down on gibson and epiphone

GIBSON - made in USA with top of the line wood/parts/everything, pro quality guitar, people who are not pros or close to pros or not even gigging yet are USUALLY: spoiled, stupid, posers, etc. range from 1000-5000$ US

EPIPHONE - made in china and korea (mostly) with decent wood, parts, etc. (some models have better parts than others), beginer to intermediate OR a workmans guitar (someone who doesn't want to show off or need perfect sound ie. tone snob, or doesnt have thousands of dollars to spend on american made guitars)range from 100-700$ US

ASUMING that you are a beginer (btw, no such thing as a gibson g400, its just called a gibson SG standard) you should go for the epiphone. to answer your initial question, unless you are a guitar nerd like myself, you will not be able to see the difference between the two guitars (the g400 is actually a copy of the gibson '61 SG reissue)

ya... so go with the epiphone and take advantage of globalization

good luck!
