Position:Home>Performing Arts> I am going to learn how to play guitar...?

Question:I have never played guitar before, and I intend on taking lessons. Do you think I should start off on an acoustic guitar or electric guitar? No matter what I start on, I definitely want to play the electric guitar eventually, but which would be best for a beginner? Thanks x

You're getting lessons; that's the best plan, and you'll make faster progress with a good teacher.

Most guitarists start out on acoustic, but there's no reason you can't start on electric if you know for certain that you want to specialize. The two are essentially the same, electrics use thinner strings that are a little easier on the fingers--that's why electric players can do faster, more technical leads and can bend notes more than acoustic players.

One tip for beginners--when starting out, practice for no more than 10 minutes at a time, four or six times a day. This will yield faster progress at first. Now, to build stamina, increase the time of one session (or more) by a couple of minutes per week. As you increase time, eventually you'll reduce number, until you're putting in over an hour in a single session daily. This method not only gets you there faster, but it builds stamina with less risk of tendinitis or blisters.

acoustic.

electric

you can learn it with your friends who knew how to play a guitar

It's best to start on acoustic. But, if you can't afford 2 guitars, you could start off with electric.

i dont think it really matters but im learning on an acoustic.... i want to play electric eventually too......

start with electric.
you don't have to press as hard on the strings.
with an acoustic, you need to press down harder on the strings to get the right sound. this will be harsh on yerr fingers for a beginner.
over time, you develop callouses on yerr fingertips, which make it easier to play.
hope i helped! && good luck learning!!

Start with a good acoustic. Thin neck, and make sure the strings are close to the neck. Condition your fingers first. You have to get past the pain before you can start to play.

Acoustic is for brginners but WOW you really should learne. that is so cool

that is awesome .. my dad was in heavy metal but he started acoustic ... he told me that if i was gonna learn i should do acoustic first ... because it improves your voice and acoustic is like basic guitar so learning electric won't be such a pain when you want to play it ...

;)

Electric is best for starting out. They are a lot easier to play. They are a lot easier on the fingers. They are also much more fun to fool around with when your not trying to play a song.

i started off with an electric, and i think its a lottttt easier than an acoustic. also, acoustic is a lot harder on your fingers, and sice your jsut starting, they'll hurt for a while after you start.

personally, i think if you're going to switch to electric, then start on electric, no point in spending the money if that's not what you really want to play, plus the styles of playing are entirely different, and if you want to play electric, then start on electric. that's what i did, and i'm glad i did it
