It's a longer process.

There are lots of ways to get into the vocalist gig, but most of them involve doing a lot of work and making some demo recordings and sending said demos to labels. Or maybe you're performing somewhere and you get discovered. Or maybe you and your band do a Dave Matthews and release your own cd and it sells 400,000 units and the record companies beat down your door.

One thing--if you've never had professional voice instruction, get it. It's not to change how you sound, it's to get your fundamentals right--proper breathing, tone production, placement. Do those things wrong, and you stand a chance of injuring your vocal mechanism and losing any shot at a career; do them right, and you'll sound better no matter what style you're in.
