Your question is an interesting one because, frankly, you can never get to a point where you can never learn more no matter what instrument you are playing. but the more commited you are, and the harder and longer you practied, (and the more natural talent you have), the sooner you will get to the point where you will feel comfortable saying "i can play guitar". It also depends on what style you are learning (steel string, classical, electric) and how good your teacher is. classical is the best way to start because you get down the basics very well. after you get good at classical, learning other styales will become much easier. how good your teacher is is a big point as well. certain teachers will keep you on tweenkle, tweenkle little star for six months while other teachers will have you playing J.S. Bach in one month. believe me ive experienced both, and playing bach makes you feel like you are on a much higher level than tweenkle tweenkle little star, and for one reason. the reason being that you are on a higher level. a much better teacher will get you to the point of saying "I play guitar" much, much faster than a lousy one. but i would heavily encourage you to take guitar up, you will have the time of your life.

About a year if your commited (or 2)

it depends. Some people can pick up an instrument and start jammin' right away. And some people have to start from square one. No telling, you just have to see for yourself! Good luck, and don't let time discourage you from learning..GO FOR IT!

You could learn to play rythym guitar in a matter of weeks. Just learn the chords and practise the changes. Simple enough. Lead, however, will take somewhat longer. I could teach a basic scale, and have you jamming in week, then expand on it for more versatility. But to really learn lead, you need a background of scales and modes, which just takes time. The time it takes, as others have said, depends on your aptitude and the time you spend.
