Get an Epiphone. It has a good rock sound and very bluesey. Fender is good but , nowadays, they are mostly made in mexico.
Epiphone has a better reselling value and is now owned by Gibson.

get a guitar with two humbucker pickups. like some ibanez's have and all epiphones do. that will give you the greatest sound manipulation possible. fenders have disappointed me in the past so i would go with epiphone.
