Question:I'm trying to learn how to play the guitar. I have a question. I'm trying to learn how to play some easy tunes, I found some online, but I don't understand how to read them. I want to play from tabs, but what do the numbers mean? Here is a example: http://www.guitarnoise.com/article.php?i...

Do you know any sites that teach you how to read these? Thanks.

ok that answer was kinda weird. anyway i have the easy way to explain it.

first you have to understand the string placements. on the guitar there are 6 strings. now the horizontal lines on the guitar tab are the strings. the top line is the thinnest E string. so its as if you are looking at the guitar from the top.

now for frets. frets are the silver things inplanted into the neck. each fret has its own idiviual #. the dots on the neck help you track each number, now if you pluck a string without holding anything on the string, that means 0. numericly that is the 0 position of the string. the first silver thing, aka fret is the first fret known as 1. when you see these on a tab they will be on a line coresponding to the string. ex

-------------
-----------
----------
----------
-0-0-

this means hit the low e string on 0 twice,

---------
------------
------------
----------
------5----
-------------

this means push your finger down onto the 5th fret on the 5th string and pluck.

now remember on guitar the first string is the thinnest string. like wise the thickest string is the 6th string. thats just how they are numbered thin to thick.

thats a basic way to read tabs.

now more complex

-------
------------
----------
-----------
-------------
-0-0-3-0-5-0-3-2---

this is a sequence of notes. in tab your read from left to right and play each note as it comes. this basicly represents one single sequence. in songs you will alot of times have several sequences which will often times be more difficult then this.

now for same notes aka chords

------
------
-----
-2-----
-2---
-0----

notes that are directly above and below eachother means that those notes are played at the same time. this means hold your finger down on the 2nd fret on both strings, and play the 0 on the 6th string as well. note that to acheive hitting both notes at the same time with the finger, place your finger flat on the fret board, this will allow you to have the meat of your finger on the two strings both at the same time.

i hope that this helped some. there are alot of other notations that you will learn over time. but for now focus on basics like that. good luck and happy learning

the numbers mean which fret you place your fingers on and strum. It does not matter which fingers you use.
For example, it says 22 on the 4th and 5th string, so place your fingers on the second fret of the 4th string, and the second fret of the 5th string as well. If it says 0 then you strum that string OPEN, meaning you don't press anything. If it has an X then it means MUTE the string. Muting is just placing your finger on the string without pressing down on it. Other common abbreviations are H for hammer-ons, P for Pull-offs, and S for slide.

Under my source is a detailed explanation of how to read tab.

Hope that helped!
