Learn Children of Bodom songs, and Black Label Society songs. LOTS of hardcore riffs in their songs, man. A Black Label Society song, for example, I like the riff in "Destruction Overdrive" I really like Michael Schenkar, he has some really catchy, hardcore riffs. You know who else?...I consider one of two best rhythm guitarists I've ever heard as Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix (his live in woodstock concert with his rhythm playing was amazing..watch it here if you want: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=... ). Van Halen is such a great rhythm guitarist (as well as lead, obviously), and a lot Van Halen songs have some really awesome riffs in them. How about "Mean Street" by Van Halen?

Other recommendations...

"Stoned and Drunk" by Black Label Society

Symphony X songs

Paul Gilbert songs. Some of his riffs may seem a little basic, but they're very catchy! (His old Racer X riffs were hardcore. Like "Street Lethal" - good stuff)

Yngwie Malmsteen riffs: "See You In Hell", "Demon Driver", "Deja Vu", "No Love Lost", "Cross The Line", "Catch 22", "Crucify" has awesome riffs, and "Wild One".

Nevermore have really awesome riffs, anddd, Megadeth.

Good luck :)

Run to the hills- Iron Maiden

well in heavy metal, you can use diminished arpeggios and scales. Also, whole tone scales are very effective in the sense that you can play them anywhere on any frets since they contain full tones.

You can also play phyrigian and locrian scales which are very widely used.
