Talk to your private teacher about helping you find opportunities first. They may be gigging a lot in your area and know the people you want to talk to. Having a connection like that is invaluable when you want to break into a giging scene. If they can't help you, go to the theaters in your area (or look them up on-line) and ask to speak to the music director or email him/her. Bring a resume and if possible a tape of yourself. If that doesn't work (you will most likely need to be a union member if you're doing anything above community theater) then seek out youth theater groups and community theater associations that employ a live pit orchestra or band. They may be happy to have you as you'll be a lot cheaper than professionals. Contact your local community colleges' theater departments as well. They often need experienced competent musicians and don't like to pay union wages. Good luck! Playing in a pit is great fun.

In the city symphony of where I live, our conductor asks specific people to play for the local productions going on. Just audition or join your local symphony, get a good seat and hope to be asked. Knowing my local play producer, she doesn't know anything about orchestras so she goes to an orchestra affiliated person. Its probably the same with your people putting on shows with pit orchestras, so thats about all the advice I can give ya.
