I taught myself guitar last summer on about.com. I helped me a little, and whats cool about it is that you can take your time learning it. If you weren't able to play the song of the week good enough, you can just continue with that lesson until you get it right! I've never tried it with a book, but I'm sure it works, too!!! I hope this helps, and good luck!

You can definitely teach yourself using books! Just be sure that you have a little patience and don't give up. Your fingers will hurt for the first while but over time the tips of your fingers will toughen up and you won't feel a thing.

Good luck with it!! :)

It's easier to teach yourself using tabs. http://guitar.about.com/library/blhowtor... here it teaches you how to read them, and here http://ultimate-guitar.com/
you can find tons of tabs, tips, even some lessons and warm-ups. I taught myself (or really, the internet taught me) how to play guitar this way.

Go to http://www.guitarprinciples.com (read extensively, and then I'd recommend getting the main book there. That's all the information you will need for the most important and fundamental technical aspects of guitar)

It's the best guitar instruction I've ever used over the years I've been playing.

Whether it's 'hard' or not, depends on each individual, and what they see as fun or worthy goals. It definitely takes effort, and of course, the more advanced you want to play, the more effort you have to put in. If you really love it, it shouldn't seem 'hard', but instead you might use the word challenging or say that it requires a considerable amount of effort, although you enjoy the whole learning process.

You can teach yourself, yes. It's quicker and easier to have someone who's already gone through the path of being able to play and effectively teach what you want to learn. (It's quicker and easier than trial and error). Keep in mind, most guitar teachers these days, can play, but not teach very well. Being able to play good is one skill, whilst teaching ability is another entirely seperate skill. (read guitarprinciples, some articles elaborate on teachers, and what to look for in one).

Good luck. :)
As long as you have the desire to get good, there's not much that can possibly stand in your way to stop you.

:)

I am self taught and play , read, compose for big band and am a Studio Guitarist.
But or order Vol. 1 Guitar from Berklee school of music. The book has 52 lessons, one for each week and this book will get you started.
Go slow and practice everyday. That is the secret.

Yea you can teach yourself.
I taught my self.
I started with Music theory,
and then i went on to scales and chords,
and finally i started learning songs.
Theres two ways of reading guitar music,
theres guitar tablature and sheet music,
for the beginner i suggest guitar tablature.
