Do you have a mic attached to your computer? Record yourself and play it back. The audio quality won't be that great but you'll get an idea of what you really sound like.

Another poster suggested that you ask people their opinions. . . this isn't exactly the best way to go. Have you ever seen those hopelessly deluded people on American Idol during the auditions? You know, the ones who walk in all confident that they're the greatest singer EVER and then they're just terrible. Then when the judges are honest about them not being good at all, the "singer" argues for 12 minutes about how everyone just loves how they sing and tell them they're amazing when they really aren't at all. People who aren't professionals will tell you want you WANT to hear to be nice and not hurt your feelings or to "feel" like they're being supportive when really, they're only setting you up for failure if you're not good.

Having said all that, if you're amazing they'll tell you that too so there's no way to know for sure unless you can find a professional to judge you (can you ask your music teacher at school or go and see a private teacher who can tell you?) or have a listen to yourself off a recording.

Alternatively, you can post a link to a sound or video file of you singing on Answers and people can give you their opinions but keep in mind that the "well-meaning" people aren't always honest as they don't want to kill your dreams.

BUT . . . you could be amazing, I'm not in any way saying you aren't . . . I haven't even heard you yet. :)

Record your voice on a cassette tape, and replay it and how it sounds to you is how it sounds to others who hear you sing.

sing to others and ask their opinion.

I f you have the ability to sing a melody and not be too far off from the proper notes, then you can sing.

How well you can sing, then, depends on how much musical training you get. The best singers get voice teachers early on. The best singers keep a voice coach for most of their careers. Luciano Pavarotti, Judy Collins, Huey Lewis--all had voice teachers until quite late in their careers.

Singers need a coach because the way you hear their own voices differently than others do--bone conduction vs. air conduction, you know? So only an impartial, expert observer can tell you if your tone is what you want it to be, and how to correct it if needed.

So, probably you're good enough. Go find a teacher. Inquire at the music department of a local college for the best referrals.

I think you know your good if you record yourself singing along to a favorite song, and actually like it. Get other people to give you their honest opinions, that way you know what to improve on. But most of all, make sure you enjoy singing. It makes a big difference.
