There are lots of famous people who started keyboards at 17. Don't worry about how old you are--worry about what's going on inside you.

You say you hate it, but you seem driven to master it. Why is that?

If you want to get to be a top pianist, then your skill will directly correlate to how many hours of practice you dedicate. Can you put in 3 hours daily? That's what I did at the height of my music program--that's what professional symphonic musicians do. If you can achieve that level of dedication, then you'll be surprised at the levels you attain in six months, a year, two years.

If you hate it, it's of no use. Do something you love!

If you like it, keep practicing. If not, it's like the girl above me, said. :)
However, there's this Contemporary Classical("New Age") musician named Yanni (ever heard of him?) who is really good at playing by ear-he has perfect pitch and cannot write music on paper like most musicians, still his music turns out MAGNIFICENT.
I've been taking a break off and on too, but I still like to play-been so busy-too busy to play, though, lately.
I can read music as well as play by ear.

Try this and see if it works:
Think about the song, that you want to perform.
Analyze it-The beats and rhythm, the tone, the arrangement (in your head or on the radio, etc)
Analyze it and break it down into parts; slow it down, play it
then speed it up and play it again; gradually speed up as you play better and better, with no mistakes.

Works for me. XD
Hope this helps!
