Position:Home>Performing Arts> Which piano pieces would you suggest to help an intermediate pianist progress mo

Question:I have been trained classically and enjoy classical and contemporary music. I can sight-read fairly decently except for tricky rythms. I am looking for pieces that will help me to be able to play more unique and difficult pieces such as Ravel's Jeux Deau, Rachmaninoff sonatas, Scriabin etudes and maybe even Liszt rhapsodies.

Some suggestions......

Moment Musical in F minor (Schubert)

The Butterfly (Grieg)

Nocturne in C major, op. 54, no. 4 (Grieg)

Puck (Grieg)

Wedding Day at Troldhagen (Grieg)

Romanze from "Faschingsswank aus Wien" (Schumann)

La fille aux cheveux de lin from Preludes, Book I (Debussy)

Gradus ad Parnassum, from Children's Corner (Debussy)

Third Episode (from Episodes for Piano) (Norman Lloyd)

Prayer to a Matador (Dello Joio)

Prelude no. 24, op. 35, in D minor (Shostakovich)

Prelude no. 10, op. 35, in C-sharp minor (Shostakovich)

Prelude no. 13, op. 39, in F-sharp major (Chopin)

Eccosaise in D major (Chopin)

Mazurka in C-sharp minor, op. 30, no. 4 (Chopin)

Fugue from Toccata in E minor (J.S. Bach)

Il canzone----from Supplement to "Years of Pilgrimage"--
Italy (using the operatic transcription, "Nessun maggior
dolore" from "Otello" of G. Rossini) (Liszt)

Sonata in C Major, L. 104 (D. Scarlatti)

Also......the easiest Hungarian Rhapsody by Liszt I suggest is the no. 17 in F-sharp minor. The no. 3 in B flat major is second easiest but the G minor section with those 32nd notes and short cadenzas may not be for you.

My personal favourite pieces when I was studying intermediate piano were:

Beethoven - Sonata quasi una Fantasia (Moonlight) No. 14
Mendelssohn - Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words)
Bach - Minuet in G major

Oh, and I can't forget Joplin's The Entertainer Rag.
