Position:Home>Performing Arts> Which hand for the guitar?

Question:Okay...
I understand left handed and righthanded people hold the guitar differently...
I'm wondering which i should use...
I'm right handed but use my left foot for sports and etc.
Basically everything (other than writing) I do involves my left side... (i even find it easier to write from right to left; or backwards)
it seems more natural holding it like a lefty...
But people tell me I should use right...
(i'ma big time beginner so yea... Understand I barely know what I'm talking about)
SO what's the honest difference between the two?

There are two theories as to which hand you should chord with (up on the fingerboard. There is the theory that the dominant hand should play the rhythm (fingerpicking or strumming) and the theory that the dominant hand should do the chording. Both have equally valid points and what really matters to you is that you get the guitar you are most likely to pick up and play.

My advice is to go to a large enough store that you can find both of them and try them out. You can also sit down with a friends (or several friends) instruments and try theirs before you buy one. If you find a guitar that is otherwise perfect for you but you absolutely want to play it left handed, get the neck nut and bridge saddle reversed. It's a minor repair and any competent guitar shop can do it in a day or so.

Ritchie Blackmore (from Deep Purple, Rainbow and Blackmore's Night) is left handed and plays guitar with his left hand on the fingerboard so you may actually get a speed and dexterity boost from having your left hand up there. I'm not really sure, but I have been pondering whether or not to have a guitar set up the other way myself, to see if my right hand can chord. My personal opinion is that guitar work, like piano work is mainly ambidextrous and you learn to play what you get used to, except in very rare cases where the brain is hard wired to do things one way and one way only. Best of luck not matter wht you decide.

If you were to start snapping your fingers to the beat of a song, which hand would you use? If you say your right hand, then you should get a right-handed guitar. This is because this is the hand that YOU naturally keep a beat with and that is the hand that you should use for strumming (the rhythm part of playing the guitar). A right-handed guitar is designed to be strummed by the right hand. If you naturally snap your fingers with your left hand, that is likely your natural strumming hand and you should buy a left-handed guitar.

BUT you say it feels more "natural" holding it like a lefty and that also needs to be addressed.

The truth of the matter is (contrary to popular belief) that since neither of your hands have guitar experience, you can train your hands any way you want!!!!! They will adapt either way. I feel certain that you are one of the few people who can easily learn it either way since you seem somewhat ambidextrous (able to do things equally with either hand).

So, I'd say if the lefty feels right (ironic phrasing there) then go with a lefty. If you find out that you hate that you can reverse the strings and play it right handed. The guitar won't sound as good if the strings are reversed, but it's better than being stuck with a guitar you can't use. OR you can always sell/trade for a right handed one if you need to.

Anyway, I feel you'd be safe getting the left handed guitar.

Good luck with your music! Playing guitar is a great hobby and can be very good for the soul.

If you're a Beatle fan like your screen name suggests, then we have a great deal in common. I'm a HUGE Beatle fan!!!!!(You might want to play left handed as a tribute to Paul McCartney!)

Get a right handed guitar and learn it right handed. You will have MANY more guitars to choose form. They do not make as many left handed guitars.
Many left-handed people learn the the right handed guitar for this reason.

By your description you will be able to learn either way so learn it right-handed. All your chord books will be easier to understand too.

Go for a righty, tabs will be easier to understand, guitars won't be as expensive, and you'll have more of them to choose from :)
