Position:Home>Performing Arts> What is a good guitar pickup to get for hardcore & metal?

Question:Given the equipment I have, what would be the best option for me to get a new pickup?

I have a new Ibanez RG3EXQM1 that has a maple neck, roswood fretboard, maple top / basswood body, with EMG stock pickups. The 3 way selector switch sucks, BTW...

and I play through a Line 6 Spider 2 amp. I play a lot of hardcore, metalcore, metal, death metal, and yes, worship.
I want a good pickup to replace the stock EMGs that has a good sound for metal (like old Underoath or As I Lay Dying) but also sounds good with hardcore and rock, and something that I can afford. Just a good, all around tone that is also good with pinch harmonics (I do a lot of these). I mainly play rhythm. Any suggestions?

Well, either replace your stock EMG's with active EMG's....

Or go with one of the *lower bass* overwound pickups from Seymour Duncan. More bass = more mud, and your guitar should already be doing okay with bass response, so .... maybe the Duncan Distortion or the Custom Custom. (When I say lower bass, I mean less than 7).

You can also go with one of their active pickups.... I've heard good things about all of them. The Dave Mustaine model would probably be a good choice, but do your research first.

Good luck!

Joe. saul is right on replace the passive EMG's with active EMG's. I use a 81 and a 85 in a les paul custom for rock, metal and worship and no chance of getting zapped while singing too. I use David Gilmore EMG's in a Strat also
