Position:Home>Performing Arts> I want to learn to play electric guitar. So which one should I buy?

Question:I'd love to learn to play the electric guitar. It would just be an after work hobby, cause it would be cool to rock on something other than Guitar Hero. I'd like to keep it under $500, especially since I'll probably give up like two months later. (Well, I'm just being realistic.)

Look for a Squier (Low-end Fender) or epiphone (low-end Gibson) package online. They should do bundles with a decent practice amp, accessories and the guitar itself. Some may include a CD/DVD and book on the basics.

At least you play Guitar Hero, so you should have decent timing and the fingers in your left hand should be quite flexible by now (if you play on expert mode...)

Within a fortnight of 30-45 mins practice you should be able to play the common major/minor chords competently and play a long to a number of your favourite songs.

people usually give the chords for the majority of songs out there.

A good song I learnt with was Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here":

Well, they run the gamut. But I'm tempted to say "A guitar's a guitar" and leave it at that. Shop around and see what's in your price range. But if you want to play electric guitar, you'll have to get more than just the guitar itself. You'll also have to have an amplifier (or amp).

depends how much u wanna spend........... if u wanna spend like a 1000 den get a fender........ or if u wanna spend like 200 den get a squier....... (the cheaper fenders)

there are $99 packages for beginners from Musician's Friend of Guitar Center to start with. You will need other things, like cords, strings, strap, and an amp, but a lot of that will come with the package, except the amp, which you can buy a small one for about the same price as the package.

To be honest, two months wont be enough time for you to rock outside of being able to play a few chords. It takes a lot of practice.

Target has a low end Fender line they sell for super cheap. But it will have no resale value so if it turns out you give it up, you might as well hang it on your wall and call it art.

It would be good if you are not certain you a serious, then if it turns out six months down the road you are still into it, you can consider upgrading your equipment.

If you want, Chris can give you lessons. He might also have an extra amp or peddle or something. I'm sure he also has some beginning books if you don't want lessons (I know they have some On Demand) I think he might have a computer program too, but that might have been for the drums or bass.
