Probably the Wizard of Oz is the most well-known, but Sound of Music would be right there with it.

Depends on how you look at it.
Some of the long-time toppers are probably The Sound of Music (a lot of Rodgers and Hammerstein, but particularly this one), The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, The Lion King (been running on Broadway for quite a while, even if many would not consider it among the top musicals), and Les Miserables
Currently, Rent and Wicked are hot on Broadway, despite Rent's closing in June.
As for up and coming shows, Spring Awakening seems to be doing quite well. I have also heard from a few that one of the newest additions to Broadway, a show called In the Heights, is quite good and may be the next big thing. We'll see.

Miss Saigon was my favourite. I also loved Les Mis and Phantom.
