Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I've seen a lot of musicals/plays, so I added the "stagedoor" application on facebook, and it asks for this information, so I want to know how to categorize each of the shows I've seen. I will tey to answer this the best that I can. Most of these titles really reference a location versus a type of show. Broadway-Commonly refers to a show that either originated, went to or is currently being performed on the main drag of the theatre district in New York City. There is a specific section near Times square usually reserved for the big money makers like The Lion King etc... Off-Broadway-Usually shows in New York that are not on that specific street. National tour-Most tours were priginally new Yo0rk based shows..some shows have multiple tours at the same time. For example Rent had a show on Broadway, but ha dtwo tours running at the sam etime. London-Just a location in Europe with a very big theatre presence Regional-These are semi-professional to professional theatres usually near major cities. They often tap local resources and/or regional talent to produce their shows. The musical "The Color Purple" was produced at a regional theatre in Atlanta before coming to Broadway. Revival-The best way to describe this would be like a movie remake...producers may find a show that was very popular (usually a musical)..and present it again with a different cast, different staging etc... Amateur-Community theatre, non paying..this could range from a school production, a church play etc... Broadway is, well, Broadway, London, I assume, means any play at the National. Off-Broadway is a type of play that often times goes on tour, and National Tour is a Broadway play that goes on tour. Regional, I suspect means local, and amateur, well, amateur. Hope I helped! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... Can't be 100% certain of the U.S.A., but Broadway = performed (or originating from) the Theatre District in New York. Off Broadway = Professional Theatres in New York which are not in/on Broadway. International = A theatre company not originating in USA or UK. (So could be African, Australian, Indian etc) London = Plays performed (or originating from) London's West End (or other London Theatres). National Tour = A show originating potentially from any professional theatre touring around the country of origin. Regional = Professional Theatre performed in a theatre in a town or city outside of the Capital City. Revival = A copy of a successful show. Not neccesarily original actors, but a faithful recreation of a production (Set, costumes, movements etc). All the above are professional only. Amateur = performed by non professional actors (from school kids to pensioners) |
