I don't think that any ones ever a complete master of the guitar, I been playing and teaching for over thirty five years and I'm still learning new things......with guitar there's always something new to learn.....tapping is the newest . It also depends on your ability, do you have perfect pitch, are you a musical genius, if so then who knows, some can play amazing after two years of study, so it depends on the individual. I would say after about five years I became pretty good at guitar playing, but this was with eight hours a day playing, I use to set my alarm for four o'clock in the morning so I could get in some practice time.....and then again after dinner, and then late in the evening. On weekends I would play hour after hour....Guitar is not an instrument that you can learn overnight....it takes a lot of time, practice, patience, and every day study.....not when your in the mood. My best students study every day and you can tell when they come for their lessons. It takes months just to get the callouses that are required to be able to play without pain, not to mention getting your muscles ready for the demands of playing.....people don't realize there's a lot of pain involved in guitar playing....but to me it's been worth every minute of it. So if you've been playing for a couple of months don't get discouraged, it takes time, not months.....play for about a year daily and then see where your at.......and PLEASE don't give up too soon, it will all come together soon !!!!!!! Good Luck !!!

I would not expect you to be that good right now. You should probably have gotten fairly good at switching between about 5 to 10 different chords and maybe a small amount of melodic lead guitar.

It took me about 3 years to get to the point where I could do anything I wanted with a guitar.

Which seems like a long time, but if you just do an hour or two of straight, focused, *goal oriented* (That one is really important!) practice everyday you should be able to attain virtuosity within two or three years.

I agree--one never fully masters any instrument. Depending on the quality of your instruction, it could take you as little as four or as many at ten years to get to be more or less a virtuoso.

The one factor that is most related is how much you practice. The very best players put in three or more hours daily if they can (that includes people who've already made it to the top, like Christopher Parkening). Now, if you're looking to become a rock and roller, a little less practice than that would perhaps do--tho' I was aware back in the '60s that Eric Clapton religiously played through his 17 rudimentary exercises daily, and he was certain they were what made him good.
